For the longest time I have wanted to pursue fashion marketing... But a recent fundraising event has me setting my sights on a completely different career path. Damn you, options.
As a part of Kathy's Leadership and Teamwork class, we had to either lead or follow a project. I chose to lead a fundraiser for the Joe's M.I.L.L, which is a fantastically unique non-profit organization. The Musical Instrument Lending Library ensures that everybody in the Kingston Community has access to musical instruments, regardless of economic factors. In other words, you take out any instrument you can imagine for an entire month- free. Pretty nifty, no?
Teamed up with Keiffer Lafrance and Kyle Bowmeister, we organized an indoor busking event in collaboration with the 2nd year Music and Digital Media students to put on concert in the cafeteria. Passer-byes and listeners tossed money into a communal guitar case, much like a real busking performance. It was a great event that raised awareness, funds, and overall entertained an otherwise dreadfully bored group of students in the caf. The bored students gave us $142 in 2 hours. Thanks guys!
What I've learned? I love fundraising. It gives me a sense of fulfillment and at the end of the day and I felt like I had a soul (I hear the advertising industry dissolves it over time). This is something where I can put my skills and talents to use in a way that benefits people who really need it- and when it comes down to it, don't we all just want a better tomorrow? Okay, I'll cut the cheese and nachos. But the not-for-profit sector... a new consideration.
